When I say hello to a group before I teach about Law Enforcement Leadership, Strategic Patrolling, Police Promotional Preparation, or Church Safety and Security, I get a kick out of knowing that many are probably wondering, “What on earth can she teach me about this?” It doesn’t offend me, because I know by the time we say farewell they’ll be smiling, engaged, enthused and leaving with tools, tips and techniques they can apply immediately.
The Experiences Behind the Expertise: Denver Police Department, 1969-1993: When I first served as a patrol officer, I had a short skirt and carried my five-shot revolver in my purse! After a tremendously enjoyable and successful career, gaining skills in every division and commanding the Training Academy and Internal Affairs, I retired as the Captain of Patrol District Two, Northeast Denver.
United States Marshal for Colorado: What an experience this was! I worked with a great USMS team to secure the Oklahoma City bombing trials (U.S. v. McVeigh, U.S. v. Nichols.) and was involved in federal responses after September 11, 2001. I served as the Chair of the Rocky Mountain Federal Executive Board for six years and participated in congressional investigations and local, state and federal committees.
Real-World Lessons–Learned and Taught: Everything I’ve ever done is part of my toolkit and briefcase and I add to it constantly. I’ve worked with patrol officers of all ranks, members of churches and church security teams, police and fire chiefs and government staff. I’ve assessed, produced assessment centers and written a book about the process. My training document on church security has been distributed countless times. On a former website, Ask the Workplace Doctors, with Dr. Bill Gordon of Kent State University, I counseled hundreds and hundreds of unhappy employees.
I hope you get the picture: My goal is to be a resource! When it seems like a good match, I provide presentations, training and consulting documents for law enforcement executives and officers of all ranks, church leaders and security team members, and non-sworn staff in criminal justice agencies
